Jemputan itu antara lain bertujuan memberi peluang kepada pemain terutamanya remaja-remaja tempatan bersaing dengan pasukan atau pemain futsal dari luar negara khususnya dari Persatuan Futsal Australia (AFA).

SIBU: It was all square as both the Australian National Futsal team and Sibu Chameleon Futsal Academy bagged a point each in the Boy’s Under-13 futsal friendly held at the futsal court at Sibu Trade and Exhibition Centre recently.

Chameleon Academy surprisingly won the first match 2-1 before a rejuvenated Australian side silenced the home crowd to take the second match 6-2.

The friendlies were jointly organised by Australia Futsal Association in collaboration with Vikings Futsal Sarawak.

After the Sibu match, the Aussies will next compete in the 2014 MPR Junior Futsal tournament on Dec 6 and 7.

They had earlier played a series of friendlies with teams in Miri and Mukah with splendid results.

Director of Vikings Futsal Sarawak Awang Zaifulizam said the aim was to develop futsal from grass-roots level and to push the futsal standard towards a new frontier.

He said they also aimed to get as many young players as possible to be involved in the game that was fast gaining popularity.

“One such way is to organise more programmes and activities to encourage the youngsters to take part in the game.

“The series of friendly matches with the Australia national team is one platform where we can draw more youngsters to take part in the game,” he said.

This was the third time the Australia team visited Sibu but it was the first time they took on the Chameleon Academy for the battle of the Under-13.

Awang said only affiliates of Vikings Futsal Sarawak were allowed to take part in the friendly matches.

“All in all, we have 16 affiliates in Sarawak and two affiliates in Kuala Lumpur and through our efforts, we are confident of lifting the standard of futsal to a new dimension.”

Australian National Futsal team tour leader Margaret Burly said only the top players in the Australian futsal league were picked for the overseas trip.

“Currently, we have over 220 futsal clubs and some 600,000 registered futsal players in Australia.

“The sport is getting popular in Australia and we have players from every corner of Australia.”

Margaret said they had been going on a world tour in the past few years to give the players more experience and exposure and tests of their play.

Besides Malaysia, the team had visited countries like New Zealand, US, Chinese Taipei, Brazil, England and Japan for a series of friendlies in the different age groups.

Margaret said Australia would play in the AMF 2015 Futsal World Cup in Minsk, Belarus and the country was making early preparations to face the challenges at the championship.

Australia had also recorded respectable results in other tournaments such as the Futsal Women’s World Cup in 2013 when the team qualified for the quarter-finals and also the World Games in Cali, Colombia in the same year.
